Pallisa, Uganda – The Territorial Police in Pallisa District are investigating the mysterious death of a 53-year-old man in custody following a domestic dispute that turned violent.

The deceased, Moses John Odongo, was arrested on Saturday, December 21, 2024, after an altercation in Kibaale Town Council and was later found unresponsive in his cell at Kibaale Police Station around 7:30 PM, just hours after his detention.

Events Leading to the Arrest

According to ASP Innocent Nuwagaba, the conflict arose from ongoing marital issues between Odongo and his wife, Rose Okurut, after allegations of an extramarital affair. The couple, who had been married for 10 years and shared one child, had been living apart due to these disputes.

The incident escalated when Odongo visited his former residence in Agurur cell to retrieve his belongings. Upon discovering another man in the house with his wife, a confrontation ensued, during which Odongo allegedly injured his mother-in-law, Regina Akurut, with a blunt object.

Local authorities, led by Agurur cell chairman Benedict Omutu, facilitated Odongo’s arrest at approximately 6:00 PM. He was detained under reference number 11/21/12/2024.

Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding Odongo’s death remain unclear. A case file, PAL.GEF.025/2024, has been opened, and the scene is being preserved for a coroner’s investigation to be led by the Chief Magistrate of Pallisa.

The police have assured the public of a thorough inquiry to determine the cause of death, emphasizing the importance of justice for all parties involved.

The tragic event has left the community shocked, with calls for transparency and accountability in the handling of suspects in custody.
