The Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI), located in Jinja, has received a significant boost in its training capabilities with the donation of two new vehicles from the government. This enhancement comes as part of the Competitive Enterprise Development of Uganda project, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU).

The donated vehicles include a specialized driver training vehicle and a custom mobile catering truck. These additions are set to greatly expand UHTTI’s ability to provide hands-on experience in both driving and catering skills, which are crucial for students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism.

The vehicles were formally handed over to UHTTI Principal Richard Kawere by Doreen Katusiime, the Permanent Secretary of the Tourism Ministry, at a ceremony held earlier this week at the Uganda Museum in Kampala. Kawere highlighted the importance of these resources for the institute’s educational programs.

“These vehicles are vital for equipping our students with practical skills in both driving and catering,” Kawere remarked during the handover.

The mobile catering truck, in particular, is expected to play a dual role. It will not only enhance students’ training by offering real-world catering experience but will also support the institute’s outside catering services and mobile clinics. These services are designed to extend hospitality skills to the community, including local food vendors.

Daniel Kazungu, the institute’s publicist, expressed appreciation for the government’s support. “The addition of these vehicles will significantly enhance our training programs and help us fulfill our mission as a center of excellence in hospitality and tourism education,” Kazungu said.

The government’s investment in UHTTI extends beyond these vehicles. Recent upgrades include the construction of a sh24 billion three-star hotel, sh19 billion worth of new infrastructure, as well as the acquisition of an institute bus and a van. With over 700 students enrolled in various hospitality disciplines, these advancements underscore the government’s commitment to bolstering the institution’s capabilities and its contribution to the tourism sector.

This latest donation represents a continued effort to develop and refine the skills of Uganda’s future hospitality professionals, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of a growing industry.
