Shukla Mukesh, CEO of Shumuk Group, has announced a Shs 3 billion investment in developing a modern inland car depot and related facilities on a newly-repossessed plot in Nakawa. The development of the prime plot on Mukabya Road (M-24/26) aligns with the group’s expansion strategy in Uganda. Speaking to journalists at the Shumuk head office in Kampala on July 24, 2024, Mukesh revealed that his company has resolved previous disputes with stakeholders concerning the land.

Mukesh announced, “We are excited to share our latest milestone: the repossession and ownership of the land, now officially under our subsidiary, Middle North Agencies Ltd. We have already cleared and improved the plot to accommodate our expansion plans and new investments, including a modern inland car depot.”

The plot, located next to the Shumuk factory in Nakawa, had been contentious, with disputes involving Shumuk, businessman Drake Lubega, and the family of the late Haruna Semakula from the defunct Big Ways (U) Ltd. Mukesh confirmed that the new arrangement is supported by a freehold title acquired in 2015 from KCCA, marked FRV KCCA 2785/2015 Folio 9. He noted that a settlement has been reached with Semakula’s family, and Lubega’s attempt to claim the plot was blocked by the court.

Looking ahead, Mukesh announced that the new car depot, managed by Shumuk Car Bond and Middle North Agencies Ltd, will soon open. The plot, approximately two-and-a-half acres in size, will accommodate over 1,000 cars. “After more than 30 years of waiting, we are finally ready to develop this land. It’s a significant achievement,” Mukesh said. “We have allocated Shs 3 billion for this project.”

Previously, the site had been used as a makeshift washing bay by local youths and women operating mini kiosks and shops. The new development is expected to boost local business, given the rising number of car depots in the area.

Mukesh emphasized the goal of making car ownership accessible to every Ugandan. “We want to ensure that anyone who can save a third of their income can afford a car. We’re offering tailor-made incentives to make car ownership a reality. Customers will only need to pay 10 percent of the car’s value upfront, with a simple and fair payment plan for the balance.”

Shumuk Group will also collaborate with banks and other lending institutions to support customers in financing their car purchases.
