Uganda Cranes Legend Baker Kasigwa Passes Away at 91

Kampala, Uganda – The Ugandan football fraternity is mourning the loss of Baker Kasigwa, a legendary figure in Uganda’s football history. Kasigwa, aged 91, passed away on Saturday at his home in Kisalizi, Masindi District, according to a statement released by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on Sunday.

“FUFA is saddened to learn of the passing on of former Uganda Cranes player Baker Kasigwa that occurred today at his home in Kisalizi, Masindi District,” read part of FUFA’s statement shared widely across its social media platforms.

Kasigwa was the last surviving member of the iconic Uganda Cranes team that made history in 1956 by playing a series of 10 friendly matches in England, famously barefoot. He was part of a golden generation of players, including Nafutali Musoke, Alfonse Temaligwe, Sam Sebbowa, Gilbert Seruwagi, and others, who laid the foundation for Uganda’s football legacy.

Notably, Kasigwa was also a member of the Uganda Cranes squad that made its debut at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1962, held in Ethiopia. His contributions helped cement Uganda’s presence on the continental football stage.

A Storied Career

Kasigwa retired from international football in 1963 but remained active in the local football scene. He played for renowned clubs, including Railways, Mutungo, Nsambya, and Bitumastic. As a coach, Kasigwa led Pepsi-Cola FC to victory in the 1961 Luwangula Cup (now the Uganda Cup) at Wankulukuku Stadium, where they defeated Kako E.A Flats.

After retiring from active play, Kasigwa took on coaching roles at Lint FC, Pepsi-Cola FC, and Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB FC). His career, however, took a turn in the early 1970s when he left UCB and returned to his native village in Masindi, where he spent his later years.

In 2017, FUFA recognized Kasigwa’s contributions to football during its Annual General Assembly. Alongside Jimmy Muguwa, he was honored with a plaque and a monetary award of UGX 1 million, a gesture of appreciation for his impact on Ugandan football.

Kasigwa’s role in shaping Ugandan football goes beyond his achievements on the pitch. He represented the spirit of resilience and dedication that continues to inspire generations of players. His journey, from pioneering Uganda’s international football exposure to his leadership in coaching, remains a cornerstone of the nation’s football history.
