Wesley Snipes is not just slaying vampires but also breaking world records!
In his recent return as Blade in the hit film Deadpool & Wolverine, the 62-year-old actor has earned two Guinness World Records. Snipes surpassed Hugh Jackman to claim the title for “longest career as a live-action Marvel character,” having first portrayed Blade in the 1998 film of the same name—over 25 years ago. Jackman, at 55, first donned the Wolverine persona in 2000’s X-Men.
Snipes also set the record for “longest gap between character appearances in Marvel films.” After his last appearance in Blade: Trinity in 2004, he exceeded the previous record held by Alfred Molina, who returned as Doc Ock in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home—17 years after his debut in Spider-Man 2.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly during Comic-Con 2024 on July 26, Snipes discussed how Ryan Reynolds reached out to him about reprising his role in the new Marvel film.
“Over the years, we’ve had some very interesting conversations, both substantive and not so much,” Snipes shared. “I figured I was moving on from them, which is fine.”
He continued, “I did three films, and I thought they turned out pretty well. So I was ready to move on to other things, bigger and better things.”
That’s when Reynolds, who starred in Blade: Trinity as Hannibal King, reached out to Snipes. “I thought it was unexpected, but when you get a call from Ryan Reynolds after 20 years, you take it,” Snipes said. “He explained the idea, and it was a ‘yes’ and ‘it’s a go.’ So here we are.”
Marvel is also working on another Blade film starring Mahershala Ali as the titular superhero. In 2021, Snipes confirmed he wasn’t involved, noting in an interview with Uproxx that Ali, 50, had “a heck of a job on his hands” with the role.
Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Reynolds alongside Jackman’s Wolverine, has made an estimated $205 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend and has grossed over $824 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
The action-comedy also includes standout cameos from Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Henry Cavill as a Wolverine variant, Tyler Mane as Sabretooth, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, and Blake Lively as Lady Deadpool.
