An official reported that tropical cyclone Hidaya has led to fatal flash floods in Kilwa district, located in the Lindi region of southern Tanzania, claiming the lives of at least two individuals.
Kilwa district commissioner, Mohamed Nyundo, disclosed on Monday that 39 individuals are currently trapped in wetlands. District authorities are collaborating with the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force to conduct rescue operations.
The overnight flash floods in the Lindi region, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the destruction of four bridges along the highway connecting the port city of Dar es Salaam with the southern regions of Lindi and Mtwara. Consequently, the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force closed down the highway on Sunday.
In response, Minister of Works, Innocent Bashungwa, instructed the Tanzania National Roads Agency to initiate repairs on the damaged bridges within a 72-hour timeframe, commencing from Sunday.
Tropical cyclone Hidaya wreaked havoc shortly before dissipating following its landfall on Mafia Island earlier on Saturday.
