Ugandan opposition figure Bobi Wine has accused President Yoweri Museveni’s administration of brutally cracking down on his generation’s political challenge, employing tactics such as extrajudicial killings, abductions, torture, and imprisonment.

In an exclusive interview with Newzroom Africa, Wine stated, “Our generation posed the greatest threat to Gen. Museveni’s nearly 38-year grip on power, and he responded with a severe crackdown.” He emphasized that his own experiences should not be viewed in isolation, pointing out, “I’ve been fortunate compared to many. I’ve been imprisoned and tortured, yet returned without losing a limb or an eye.”

Initially known as a musician, Wine transitioned into politics to become Uganda’s youngest opposition leader in 2017, challenging Museveni’s lengthy rule. Since then, he has frequently clashed with authorities, whom he believes aim to deter his presidential aspirations.

“My friends have suffered grievous injuries—missing teeth, lost sight,” Wine lamented, underscoring the regime’s brutality. “This crackdown targets not just me, but our entire generation.”

In collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, Wine explores how the youth vote is reshaping African politics and advocates for greater female involvement in public leadership. “Empowering youth and women to control their future is crucial,” he stressed.

Wine continues as Uganda’s official opposition leader, advocating for human rights and condemning the government’s suppression of political opposition. His interview with Newzroom Africa offers a candid glimpse into his struggles and his vision for a more democratic and inclusive Uganda.
