ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, announced plans to downsize its workforce in Indonesia after integrating a local e-commerce company, Tokopedia, with its operations. The exact number of employees affected was not disclosed, although Bloomberg reported that approximately 450 jobs would be cut. In January, ByteDance finalized its acquisition of a majority stake in Tokopedia from the GoTo group.

ByteDance spokesperson Nuraini Razak informed Reuters that the company would undertake “necessary adjustments” following the integration of TikTok and Tokopedia. She stated, “We have identified areas for organizational strengthening and aligning our teams with company objectives,” adding that ByteDance aims to support employees during this transition. Previously, ByteDance operated its own e-commerce platform in Indonesia through TikTok, which was discontinued due to Indonesian regulations prohibiting social media apps from functioning as e-commerce platforms.
