A 24-year-old Ugandan TikToker, Edward Awebwa, has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of spreading hate speech and malicious content targeting President Museveni, the First Lady, and the First Son. The ruling was handed down by the Entebbe Chief Magistrate Court Judge following Awebwa’s arrest for posting a video on the “Save Media Uganda” platform, where he directed insults and tribalistic remarks at the first family.
The video, which caused significant disturbance, led to Awebwa’s arrest and subsequent sentencing. His case underscores a growing crackdown on online content creators who propagate offensive communication and hate speech.
Edward Awebwa’s sentencing adds to a string of similar cases involving social media personalities in Uganda. Earlier instances include the remand of Pressure 24/7 for offensive communication charges related to insults against prominent figures like the President and the Kabaka of Buganda. Likewise, MC Chumi faced similar accusations but was later granted bail.
