The Turkish Education Ministry has issued a directive to two French schools in Turkey, instructing them to relocate Turkish students elsewhere if certain conditions are not met.

In a statement released by the French embassy in Ankara, ongoing discussions with Turkish authorities were acknowledged. However, the embassy noted a new draft agreement presented by Turkey in mid-June, which exceeds previous proposals.

On July 2, the embassy received an official notice from Turkish officials regarding Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle and Lycée Français Pierre Loti. The notice stipulated that without a signed agreement, these schools would be unable to admit Turkish students in the upcoming academic year, necessitating the transfer of current Turkish students to Turkish educational institutions.

Both schools offer education spanning from kindergarten through high school.

Further discussions will occur with a delegation from Paris planning to visit Turkey in collaboration with the Turkish Education Ministry.

“If these schools meet our requirements, they can continue their operations,” commented Education Minister Yusuf Tekin. “Otherwise, we will initiate the necessary legal procedures.”

The Charles de Gaulle school has informed parents about the ongoing process, acknowledging communication from the ministry regarding rumors of potential school closure.

The specific details of the negotiations remain unclear. These French schools in Turkey follow the French educational system, which differs from the Turkish curriculum, potentially complicating the transfer process for current students.

Earlier in May, administrative fines totaling 21.3 million Turkish liras were imposed on five other French schools in Istanbul for violating competition laws by jointly determining school fees and salaries for Turkish teachers.
