Bamasaba Cultural Icon Mrs. Catherine Hanyiga Passes Away

Mbale, Uganda – The Bamasaba Cultural Institution has announced the passing of Mrs. Catherine Eleanor Hanyiga, the renowned voice behind the Bamasaba anthem.

Her death was confirmed by Mr. Steven Masiga, spokesperson of the institution, in a heartfelt Sunday statement addressed to the Bamasaba people in Uganda, Kenya, and the diaspora.

A Voice That Defined a Culture

“It is with deep sorrow that we inform all Bamasaba people about the untimely demise of Mrs. Catherine Hanyiga, the heroine behind the beautiful melodies of the Bamasaba anthem,” Mr. Masiga stated.

Mrs. Hanyiga, who had been battling illness, demonstrated remarkable dedication to the cultural heritage of her people. Despite her health challenges, she participated in interviews earlier this year to discuss the anthem’s significance, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the Bamasaba community.

Her interviews were broadcast on prominent platforms, including NTV, Daily Monitor, Radio Uganda, and others, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

A Legacy of Cultural Preservation

Mrs. Hanyiga was not only a cultural icon but also a trained teacher and a graduate of Makerere University in the 1970s. She leaves behind a legacy as a key figure in preserving and celebrating the cultural identity of the Bamasaba people.

In recognition of her contributions, HRH Jude Mike Mudoma, Umukuka III and cultural leader of the Bamasaba, has directed the Prime Minister of Inzu Ya Masaba to organize a befitting farewell for the cultural luminary in coordination with her family.

“This is a great loss to the family, Masabaland, and the entire music fraternity,” Mr. Masiga said.
