Heavy rains pounded the Karamoja region over the weekend, causing havoc by sweeping away multiple bridges and disrupting traffic flow. The downpour led to the closure of the road linking Mbale to Amudat via Karita, as several culverts collapsed and Karita bridge succumbed to flooding.

Concerns loom over the stability of Namalera bridge in Namalu town council, with residents fearing its potential collapse if the rainfall persists. Similarly, the road from Napak to Abim via Nyakwae sub-county faces jeopardy if the inclement weather persists. Moreover, the Moroto to Namalu route via Nabilatuk is severely affected due to flooding at the Lolachat bridge.

Joseph Lokol, the chairperson of Nabilatuk district, reports that numerous culverts have been washed away, rendering many roads impassable. Joel Lote, a local trader, anticipates challenges in transporting goods from Mbale to Amudat via Nakapiripirit due to the road conditions.

Expressing frustration, Lote questions the response of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), as most of the damaged roads fall under their jurisdiction. Allan Sempebwa, the Public Relations Officer of UNRA, assures that their team is assessing the situation on the ground to address the road damages.
