Rwanda Challenges US Allegations: Denouncing Unjust Blame in Goma Bombing Controversy

Rwanda emphasized that it refuses to bear responsibility for the failures of the DRC government, including the bombing of IDP camps near Goma and broader issues of security and governance.

The government spokesperson asserted that credible investigation and verification must precede any attribution of responsibility, highlighting concerns about the placement of heavy artillery by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) within IDP camps, despite prior warnings from organizations in Goma, such as Médecins Sans Frontières.

Moreover, Rwanda criticized what it sees as a recurring pattern of scapegoating by the US government, emphasizing that such actions undermine its credibility as a facilitator in the region and hinder its potential to contribute positively to peaceful resolutions.

Furthermore, Rwanda expressed disappointment in the international community’s lack of attention to the escalating military activities and armed conflicts in eastern DRC, along with the resultant humanitarian crises affecting millions of Congolese citizens.

Regarding alleged threats from Congolese leadership to invade Rwanda, the Rwandan government affirmed its commitment to defending its territory and taking necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty.

In response to the US attributing blame to the Rwandan army and M23 rebel group for the bombing in Goma, Rwanda underscored the ongoing disputes between the Congolese army and M23, with each side accusing the other of responsibility. Rwanda also rejected widespread accusations of backing the M23 rebel group.

The US State Department’s assertion that the attack originated from positions held by the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) and the M23 group raised further objections from Rwanda. The spokesperson urged both parties to uphold human rights and adhere to international humanitarian law amidst escalating tensions in eastern DRC.
