China Helps Feed 165,000 Students in Uganda

Funding from China, channeled through the World Food Programme (WFP), will provide school meals for over 165,000 students in the northeastern Ugandan region of Karamoja. This initiative, reported by China Daily in collaboration with TV BRICS, aims to enhance educational outcomes by ensuring regular meals for children.

The WFP will utilize the funding to procure maize, beans, and vegetable oil, ensuring that students receive nutritious meals daily. By doing so, the program aims to incentivize school attendance, reduce dropout rates, and promote sustained educational engagement among the youth.

Furthermore, the WFP emphasizes the significance of sourcing food locally, benefiting smallholder farmers who will have a steady market for their produce. This approach not only enhances food security but also stimulates economic growth within the region.

The home-based school feeding program implemented by the WFP has already demonstrated significant improvements in food security and economic vitality, thanks to its focus on providing nutritious meals and supporting local agriculture.

Zhang Lizhong, China’s ambassador to Uganda, highlighted China’s commitment to supporting food security, nutrition, and local economies in Uganda through this donation.

Statistical evidence indicates that children who benefit from school feeding programs are more likely to achieve success in various fields, including entrepreneurship, medicine, and public service. By addressing these fundamental issues, the WFP aims to pave the way for a brighter future for Uganda through its school lunch initiatives.
