Man Utd announce Raphael Varane will leave after refusing to trigger contract extension

Manchester United have confirmed that veteran defender Raphael Varane will leave the club as a free agent this summer.

United announced the news in a statement on Tuesday morning following months of speculation over his future.

The centre-half, 31, joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2021 and has made 93 appearances in total for United.

It emerged earlier in the season that United had decided against triggering the one-year option in Varane’s contract. And the World Cup winner will seek pastures new once the season comes to an end later this month.

“It’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Manchester United player was insane; the atmosphere was amazing.

“I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents. For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me for life. The Man Utd player said.
