The leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party in Luwero District have commenced the implementation of their campaign in the district, aiming to enhance and sustain its support base.
According to NUP registrars in Luwero, this initiative will be conducted across various local levels including district, constituency, sub-county, parish, and village levels.
Mr. Steven Ssenteza, NUP registrar, stated, “New members will be registered at our office premises, and we are also arranging to deploy teams for door-to-door registration to ensure inclusivity.”
The launch event on Saturday, May 19, at St Paul Hotel was attended by local MPs Denis Sekabira (Katikamu North), Hassan Kirumira Lukalidde (Katikamu South), and Woman MP Brenda Nabukenya.
Kirumira emphasized, “We aim for every resident of Katikamu South to be a member of the National Unity Platform. We need a well-organized and united front to challenge the NRM flag bearers in the district.”
Sekabira urged registrars at all levels to be vigilant in identifying any attempts to sabotage the exercise.
He remarked, “I doubt anyone not supporting NUP would register with us. However, given the shared challenges we face economically, socially, and politically, it’s crucial to align with those advocating for our interests.”
Sekabira anticipates a significant turnout for the registration exercise to solidify their collective identity.
He added, “If you feel your rights are being suppressed, it’s imperative to align with those fighting for them.”
Despite past interruptions by security agencies and government officials, Ms. Nabukenya affirmed their determination to see the registration through successfully.
“We expect no interference from the police, as the law allows for such activities. However, should any disruptions occur, we are prepared to address them,” she asserted.
In the 2021 general elections, NUP made significant gains in Luwero, securing four Members of Parliament, the district chairperson, and a substantial number of Local Council three leaders.
“We aim to uphold our achievements and expand our representation in the district. Therefore, we are committed to unity, mobilization, and retention of our current support base while striving for further growth,” Nabukenya emphasized.
The NUP registration drive commenced on April 30 and is scheduled to continue until the end of the month.
