Nutrition and Health in Europe: Tackling Noncommunicable Disease

What you need to know:

  • A myriad of delicious and nutrient-rich foods doesn’t just tantalize taste buds but also extends both the quantity and quality of life.
  • Unhealthy eating habits, coupled with overweight and obesity, fuel a significant portion of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, collectively ranking as the primary causes of mortality in the region.

A myriad of delicious and nutrient-rich foods doesn’t just tantalize taste buds but also extends both the quantity and quality of life. Yet, across the WHO European Region, the burden of disease stemming from poor nutrition continues to mount. Unhealthy eating habits, coupled with overweight and obesity, fuel a significant portion of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, collectively ranking as the primary causes of mortality in the region.

National surveys across most countries reveal a concerning trend: excessive intake of energy, saturated fats, trans fats, sugar, and salt, paired with inadequate consumption of essential food groups like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This dietary imbalance not only curtails life expectancy but also erodes overall well-being. Additionally, a growing segment of the population grapples with obesity, further exacerbating health risks.

Concurrently, in select countries and among specific vulnerable demographics, undernutrition persists as a pressing issue.
