West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for allegedly getting booked deliberately “for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market.”
The charges pertain to four matches: a Premier League game against Leicester City on 12 November 2022, and fixtures in 2023 against Aston Villa on 12 March, Leeds United on 21 May, and Bournemouth on 12 August.
The 26-year-old Brazil international has been under investigation since last summer due to suspicious betting patterns.
According to an FA statement, Paqueta is accused of intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee to influence the progress or conduct of these matches, thereby affecting the betting market for the profit of one or more individuals.
Paqueta, who joined West Ham from Lyon for £36.5 million in August 2022, expressed his shock and disappointment at the charges.
“For nine months, I have cooperated fully with the investigation and provided all the information requested. I deny all the charges and will fight vigorously to clear my name,” he said.
Additionally, Paqueta faces charges of “two breaches of FA Rule F3” related to alleged failures to comply with FA Rule F2, which involves providing information and documents.
These charges were announced on the same day that West Ham confirmed Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach, following David Moyes’ departure.
West Ham issued a statement affirming their support for Paqueta throughout the process.
Paqueta, who has been selected for Brazil’s squad for the upcoming Copa America, has until 3 June to respond to the misconduct charges, unless an extension is requested.
