In the first four months of 2024, Istanbul welcomed an impressive total of 5,244,936 foreign tourists, breaking previous records and solidifying its status as one of the most visited cities in the world.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, this influx of visitors marks a significant 9.94% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, showcasing Istanbul’s enduring appeal to international travelers.

In April alone, Istanbul saw a remarkable surge in tourism, hosting 1,478,218 foreign visitors—an impressive 14.60% increase from the previous year. This surge not only highlights Istanbul’s popularity but also underscores its pivotal role in driving Turkish tourism.

Among the top nationalities visiting Istanbul in April were visitors from Russia, Germany, Iran, and the United States, with notable numbers also arriving from France, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. These diverse origins reflect Istanbul’s universal allure and its ability to captivate visitors from across the globe.

Istanbul Entry points

In terms of entry points, Istanbul Airport emerged as the primary gateway for foreign visitors, accommodating a staggering 1,063,035 arrivals in April alone—constituting over 72% of total air arrivals. Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the city’s second-largest airport, also experienced significant traffic, welcoming 394,772 foreign visitors during the same period.

Moreover, Istanbul’s appeal extends beyond air travel, with a notable number of tourists arriving by sea. In April, 19,135 foreign visitors chose to explore Istanbul via its picturesque waterfront, adding to the city’s dynamic tourism landscape.

Accommodation statistics further underscore Istanbul’s popularity, with Ministry-certified facilities reporting over a million arrivals in March alone. These facilities witnessed a total of 2,219,479 nights spent, reflecting an average stay of 2.21 days and an occupancy rate of 45.85%.

The continuous influx of visitors to Istanbul not only enriches the city’s cultural tapestry but also contributes significantly to its economy.
