Tourism prospects anticipate a decline in visitor numbers, attributing it to a combination of factors such as inclement weather, the ongoing cost of living crisis, and a preference for international holidays. Malcolm Bell, the chairman of Visit Cornwall, predicts a decrease of 15% to 20% in tourism figures for Devon and Cornwall during the recent half-term week. He estimates around 102,000 day-trippers and approximately 495,000 overnight stays.

However, Rick Turner, the owner of the Big Sheep attraction in Devon, presents a contrasting view, reporting robust visitor numbers in the tourism prospects. He expects to see a rise of 10% to 20% by week’s end compared to last year, partly due to increased local patronage seeking leisure activities during the half-term break.

Ernie Elsworth-Wilson, the general manager of South Devon Railway, echoes this positive trend, noting an upturn in foot traffic compared to the same period last year. Despite these encouraging reports, Bell acknowledges that weather conditions significantly impact visitation rates, stating that although the weather has been acceptable, it hasn’t been optimal.

Sally Everton, representing Visit Devon, highlights concerns raised by local businesses regarding lower-than-expected numbers, partly attributed to recent media coverage of the cryptosporidium situation in Brixham, leading to cancellations across the county. Everton notes that while initial reports may have generalized the issue to all of Devon, more accurate reporting now specifies the affected area as South Devon and Brixham.
