Introduction
In the remote village of Kapulukuchu A in Sekulo Parish, Kadimukoli Sub-county, Budaka District, 21-year-old Daphine Babirye watches her peers attend school with a mix of longing and determination. Despite her circumstances, Babirye’s unwavering resolve to continue her education is a testament to her resilience and tenacity.
Early Education and Setbacks
Babirye began her education at Bugade Primary School in Mayuge District and later joined Kamonkoli Seed Secondary School for Senior One in 2023. Unfortunately, her academic journey was abruptly halted when her mother, Ms. Edith Naula, could not pay the school fees of Shs100,000. As a result, Babirye was forced to leave school.
Struggles and Hardships
In a bid to fund her education, Babirye moved to Mukono in March to find work. She found employment as a waitress in a hotel, hoping to save enough money for her school fees. Despite her efforts, she only managed to save Shs190,000 over two months, falling short of her goal.
Undeterred, Babirye used her savings to buy a mini-speaker and a memory card, costing Shs180,000 and Shs10,000 respectively, to pursue a new venture in singing. She performed on the streets of Mukono, Kireka, Bweyogerere, and Mbalala, earning between Shs30,000 and Shs50,000 per day. However, her journey was not without challenges, as council officials often arrested her and demanded Shs100,000 for her release.
A Glimmer of Hope
Babirye’s determination caught the attention of many. During the Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo on June 3, she managed to collect Shs50,000 from her singing. Her dream of becoming a lawyer and serving the underprivileged in her community kept her motivated.
Upon returning from Namugongo, Babirye received life-changing news. Bugwere High School offered her a bursary after seeing a video of her singing in trading centers to raise school fees. Her mother, Ms. Naula, expressed immense joy at the prospect of her daughter returning to school.
Community Support and Future Aspirations
The headmaster of Bugwere High School, Mr. Azizi Walumoli, acknowledged Babirye’s love for education and decided to offer her a bursary. However, Babirye still needs basic scholastic materials, including a mattress and blanket, to fully take advantage of this opportunity.
Daphine Babirye’s story is one of resilience and hope. Despite numerous obstacles, her determination to pursue education remains unwavering. With the support of her community and the bursary from Bugwere High School, Babirye is one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a lawyer and making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged. Her journey is an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance and the impact of community support in transforming lives.
