What you need to know:

  • Real Madrid have already clinched the La Liga title this season, reached the Champions League final, and are set to acquire France striker Kylian Mbappe from Paris St-Germain in the upcoming transfer window.
  • Xavi assumed the managerial position in November 2021 after departing Qatari club Al Sadd and led Barcelona to the Spanish title in his inaugural full season in charge in 2022-23.

In January, the 44-year-old announced his intention to step down at the season’s end but was convinced by club president Joan Laporta to remain. However, recent remarks made by Xavi during a press conference seem to have upset the club’s board, who now believe the former Spain midfielder should leave. Barcelona B team manager Rafael Marquez is the frontrunner to assume the managerial role.

Before their recent victory against Almeria, Xavi hinted at the financial challenges of competing with Real Madrid and other European powerhouses. “Barca fans must grasp the difficult economic landscape, particularly compared to Real Madrid in Spain and other European clubs,” he stated. “We’ll adjust accordingly, while remaining committed to contending for trophies. Stability and time are essential for Barcelona at this juncture.”
