Following the incident, where a gunman shot Trump in the ear, killed one person in the crowd, and injured two others at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Biden swiftly called for unity. The gunman was killed by Secret Service agents.
In a statement issued within an hour of the attack, President Biden declared, “There is no place in America for this. We must unite as one nation to condemn it. It’s sick, it’s sick.”
The attack occurred amid a highly charged election race between Biden and Trump, marked by personal insults and criticisms of their respective records in office.
In televised comments from his home in Delaware, President Biden emphasized the need for a united front, stating, “Everybody must condemn the violent scenes in Butler. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”
He expressed relief that Trump was safe and wished him a swift recovery, adding, “I’m praying for him and his family and for all those at the rally. Jill [Biden] and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety.”
The White House later confirmed that President Biden spoke to his Republican election rival by telephone after Trump was discharged from the hospital. Biden’s campaign managers announced they were pulling television adverts as quickly as possible in the aftermath of the assassination attempt.
Democrats unite to condemn attack
Vice-President Kamala Harris echoed President Biden’s sentiments. Prominent Democrats, including former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also condemned the violence.
Vice-President Harris stated that she was “relieved” Trump was not seriously injured in what she termed a “senseless shooting.” She emphasized, “Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose family has also been a victim of political violence, expressed her prayers for Trump, saying, “As one whose family has been the victim of political violence, I know first-hand that political violence of any kind has no place in our society. I thank God that former President Trump is safe.”
Both former Presidents Clinton and Obama echoed these sentiments, stating that violence has no place in politics and offering their prayers for Trump’s recovery.
