What you need to know:

  • Boniface was highly anticipated to perform well at the tournament, with Peseiro planning to use a system that would pair the Germany-based forward with Victor Osimhen up front.
  • He could also operate on both sides of the strikers, making him a crucial element for us in the tournament.

Former Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, expressed that Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface could have significantly impacted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations if not for an injury.

The 23-year-old striker was forced to miss the tournament due to an injury sustained during the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi.

Boniface was highly anticipated to perform well at the tournament, with Peseiro planning to use a system that would pair the Germany-based forward with Victor Osimhen up front.

Peseiro has since parted ways with the Super Eagles after contract renewal negotiations with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) broke down.He had led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were defeated by the host nation, Ivory Coast.

The Portuguese coach believes that Nigeria could have won the AFCON trophy if Boniface had been available.”Boniface would have made a significant difference if he hadn’t been injured,” Peseiro said in an interview in Portugal, as reported by AfricafootUnited.

“He was very confident and could comfortably play in our two-man attacking style. He could also operate on both sides of the strikers, making him a crucial element for us in the tournament.”His absence limited our options to refine our style.”
