Boost for Western Uganda Businesses: PSFU Opens Regional Office in Mbarara

What you need to know:

  • a large and productive population, a strategic location bordering Tanzania, Rwanda, and DRC, and a vibrant hub for sectors like agribusiness, transport, tourism, and finance.
  • As businesses tap into the resources of the new PSFU office, a wave of innovation and entrepreneurship is expected.

The Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) has unveiled its first regional office in Mbarara, marking a significant moment for businesses in the western Ugandan region. This strategic move signals PSFU’s commitment to decentralize its support and empower local entrepreneurs.

Previously, businesses had to navigate logistical challenges to access PSFU services solely offered in Kampala. “We’re moving closer to the businesses that need us most,” emphasized PSFU CEO Steven Asiimwe. The Mbarara office will act as a central hub, providing crucial training and guidance to individual businesses, private sector associations, and cooperatives.

The western region is a powerhouse for Uganda’s economy. Asiimwe acknowledged its strengths: a large and productive population, a strategic location bordering Tanzania, Rwanda, and DRC, and a vibrant hub for sectors like agribusiness, transport, tourism, and finance. PSFU’s presence will allow businesses to tap into this rich ecosystem and thrive in regional and international markets.

Accessibility is key. The Mbarara office streamlines access to PSFU’s services. Businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), will no longer face the burden of travel and bureaucracy to obtain crucial support for growth. This reduces costs and allows them to focus resources on innovation and expansion.

However, collaboration is crucial. Mbarara City Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between local business associations like the Mbarara City Traders Association and PSFU. Working together, they can ensure the office effectively addresses the needs of the local business community, particularly SMEs, and empowers them to reach their full potential.

Women-led businesses are another critical focus. Mbarara Woman MP Ritah Atukwasa Bwahika recognized the need for tailored training and guidance to empower women’s groups across the region. PSFU’s presence can bridge the gap by providing these groups with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

The Mbarara office is just the beginning. Established in 1995, PSFU has a long history of advocating for the private sector, building capacity, and fostering positive dialogue with the government. With its expanded reach, PSFU can now empower businesses across the entire western region, solidifying its role as a pillar of Uganda’s economic growth.

As businesses tap into the resources of the new PSFU office, a wave of innovation and entrepreneurship is expected. This strategic move has the potential to unlock the region’s full economic potential and propel Uganda’s private sector to even greater heights.
