A new broadband internet service provider, CanalBox, has officially launched in Uganda. The company has invested over Shs50 billion in the past 11 months leading up to the launch.
CanalBox offers two fiber optic internet plans: the Start plan at 50 Mbps and the Premium plan at 200 Mbps, designed for basic and heavy internet users respectively. The plans are priced at Shs110,000 and Shs200,000 per month.
Jean-François Duboy, the Managing Director of GVA, stated that the aim is to democratize broadband internet access through fiber. “With a speed of 200 Mbps for only Shs200,000, in terms of price, speed, and value for money, we are convinced it will be game-changing. CanalBox will enable many Ugandan families to connect to high-speed internet in their homes,” he said.
Julius Kayoboke, CEO of GVA, noted that when they entered the Ugandan market, only 30,000 homes were connected to fiber internet compared to Kenya’s 600,000. In the past 11 months, they have covered 5,000 homes and project to reach another 500,000 homes in Kampala within three to four years.
Julianne Mweheire, Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), highlighted that increased internet access boosts business opportunities and fosters innovation. CanalBox’s internet plans are ideal for businesses, homes, and schools requiring reliable internet for streaming, video conferencing, and other demanding applications.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, welcomed CanalBox to the Ugandan market. “The entry of such a significant player in Uganda is a vote of confidence in our government’s business-friendly policies, our country, and our people,” Tayebwa said. “We look forward to seeing the impact you will make in growing broadband internet prevalence in Uganda.”
