A group of legislators, led by Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, are preparing a motion to censure Mathias Mpuuga and the three Backbench Commissioners over a controversial service award.
The motion cites misconduct and abuse of office.
In March 2022, Mr. Mpuuga, then the Leader of the Opposition, negotiated and received Shs500 million as a service award from the Parliamentary Commission.
In a meeting chaired by Speaker Anita Among, Shs400 million was also awarded to each of the three backbench commissioners: Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central), Esther Afoyochan (Zombo Woman), and Prossy Mbabazi (Rubanda Woman) – all from the ruling National Resistance Movement party.
The four received the controversial payments on a personal basis before completing a year in office, raising questions about the legitimacy of the “award.”
While the three backbench commissioners have remained silent on the matter, Mr. Mpuuga has defended himself vigorously, insisting on his innocence despite criticism from his party, the National Unity Platform, and its leader, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi.
