Counting Uganda: Insights from the 2024 Census Journey

  • Frank Baine, Uganda Prisons Commissioner, confirms the smooth conduct of the census in prisons, involving 397 enumerators and 125 supervisors across 269 prisons, 19 regions, with 77,000 inmates and 14,000 staff.

The Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is ensuring that every citizen who spent the census night in Uganda is counted, including those abroad through designated questionnaires.

On May 10, 2024, the President of Uganda, Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tubuhaburwa Museveni, and the First Lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, were enumerated at State House Nakasero in Kampala, overseen by Dr. Chris Ndatira Mukiza, the Executive Director/National Census Commissioner of UBOS. The President commended Dr. Mukiza and his team for conducting a comprehensive exercise with detailed questions.

The Vice President of Uganda, H.E Jessica Alupo, and her family completed the enumeration exercise in Oigo Imomwa, Ongongoja Sub County, Katakwi district. Similarly, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja, was counted at her residence in Kakumiro district, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based planning facilitated by the Uganda Census 2024.

Representing the Kabaka of Buganda, Nabagereka Sylvia Naginda participated in the census. The Kyabazinga of Busoga Kingdom, His Royal Highness William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV, was officially counted at his Igenge palace in Jinja. Iteso cultural leader Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeilenge also took part and encouraged others to do the same.

Frank Baine, Uganda Prisons Commissioner, confirms the smooth conduct of the census in prisons, involving 397 enumerators and 125 supervisors across 269 prisons, 19 regions, with 77,000 inmates and 14,000 staff.

Other notable figures counted include Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, the Bishop of Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Bishop Gaddie Akanjuna, and Bugisu Cooperative Union Chairman and MP for Budadiri West, Mr. Nandala-Mafabi Nathan James.

Kampala Capital City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was enumerated on Day Two of the 2024 Uganda census. The UBOS’ third Census, the first digital one, commenced on May 10, 2024, and will continue until May 19, covering the entire country.
