Federal Ministry Raises Alert
Nigeria’s Kwara State is in the grip of a poison outbreak at its cattle market near the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies in Adewole, Ilorin. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security issues a cautionary alert regarding this alarming incident, reported by the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Tragic Events Unfold
Towards the end of April 2024, the ministry notes a mortality event within a herd at the market. Investigations reveal that the animals consumed forage previously fumigated with an organophosphate chemical, leading to dire consequences.
Public Health Risks
Clinical signs such as hypersalivation, weakness, and recumbency prompt herders to slaughter seven of the weakest animals for public consumption. This action poses severe public health risks, with potential repercussions in the food chain, as highlighted by the ministry’s statement from Abuja.
Swift Response and Treatment
Each state maintains a Rapid Response Team (RRT) comprising federal epidemiology officers, state directors of veterinary services, and state epidemiology officers, trained by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. These teams are swiftly mobilized to address emergencies like the ongoing outbreak.
Treatment and Recovery Efforts
Efforts are underway to treat 40 suspected poisoned animals with organophosphate antidotes, resulting in significant improvement and recovery. Additionally, measures include thorough cleaning and disinfection of the abattoir, raising public awareness about the hazards of consuming meat from affected animals, and collecting blood and tissue samples for laboratory testing.
Preventative Measures
To avert future crises stemming from hazardous agricultural practices, the ministry emphasizes the dangers of consuming unwholesome meat, particularly contaminated with organophosphates. Public awareness and stringent enforcement of safety protocols are crucial in safeguarding both human health and livestock welfare.
