At the Ex-Robots factory in Dalian, a northeastern coastal city of China, engineers are busy crafting humanoid robots that prioritize improving facial expressions and emotions. On the factory floor, tables are strewn with neck-length silicone masks, alongside silicone arms and feet. Disembodied heads are on display, while humanoid robots in different stages of assembly stand nearby. The walls are adorned with drawings of robot designs, illustrating the innovative work being undertaken at the facility.

“We have dedicated software and algorithm teams,” stated Li Boyang, Chief Executive of Ex-Robots, emphasizing that humanoid robots represent the most intricate category of robotic products.

“Many basic models and algorithms are widely open-source and universally utilized. However, our focus lies in enabling AI to accurately recognize and convey expressions and emotions.”

In a demonstration, an Ex-Robots employee moves her head, smiles, and sticks out her tongue. Nearby, a humanoid robot mimics these actions, enabled by miniature motors strategically placed within its head.

“We are currently developing the foundational model. Our model is multi-modal and designed for emotional expression. It can perceive the surrounding environment and generate suitable facial responses,” explained Li.

Ex-Robots indicated that it typically takes between two weeks to a month to manufacture a humanoid robot, priced between 1.5 million yuan ($207,000) and 2 million yuan.

Currently, the primary use of the company’s robots is for exhibition purposes, with one prominently displayed in a museum located within the same building as its factory.
