What you need to know:
- I have been hearing that from the Ministry of Finance, they arrange with accounting officers of ministries to come to Parliament to provide certain funds provided they take a share,” Museveni said during the state of the nation address.
- “There is a lot of debate about the recent state of the nation address by the president where he indicated he had taken an interest in some dealings at the Ministry of Finance and Parliament,” Enanga said when asked to comment on the matter.
Security was heightened on Monday morning at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (CID) headquarters in Kibuli.
The heavy deployment followed reports that a group of legislators and Parliament staff had been summoned to provide statements regarding corruption allegations.
Journalists were denied access to the CID headquarters, but sources indicated that several government officials arrived as early as 8 am in tinted vehicles to avoid detection.
Last week, President Museveni announced he had evidence implicating officials from the Ministry of Finance and Parliament staff in taking kickbacks.
“I have been hearing stories about a racket between the Ministry of Finance and Parliament. I have been hearing of it, but now I have proof. Their time is up. I have been hearing that from the Ministry of Finance, they arrange with accounting officers of ministries to come to Parliament to provide certain funds provided they take a share,” Museveni said during the state of the nation address.
He stated that he was going to take action.
On Friday, a detective at the CID told Nile Post that their director, Tom Magambo, had briefed them about impending arrests of VIP persons and instructed the Police in Kira to prepare VIP cells for ‘clients.’
Police Deny Summons
However, on Monday, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga denied that any officials had been summoned to the CID for questioning.
“There is a lot of debate about the recent state of the nation address by the president where he indicated he had taken an interest in some dealings at the Ministry of Finance and Parliament,” Enanga said when asked to comment on the matter.
“We don’t have any confirmation from the CID about having summoned any Ministry of Finance and Parliament officials.
“Investigation is a process, and if we get information supporting the summoning of any witness, we shall inform the public. You can even approach those named on social media to get their comments and find out if they are the subject of the information.”
When asked about the heavy police deployment at the CID headquarters, Enanga described it as routine.
“CID is guarded by the VIP protection unit, and this continues as part of the security arrangement there.”
