Government Launches 1.2 Billion Shillings Water Project to Combat Severe Shortage in Hoima District

The government has initiated the construction of a mini piped water facility in Kyakaboga village, Buseruka sub-county, Hoima district, at a cost of 1.2 billion Shillings. The project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, aims to provide more than 5,000 residents in Kyakaboga A, Kyakaboga B, and surrounding areas, who have long faced severe water shortages, with access to clean water.

The contract for this project has been awarded to Nahi Construction Company Limited, with construction set to begin this month and expected to last six months.

Geoffrey Komakech, the Buseruka Sub-county Councilor, emphasized that the new piped water system will be crucial in supplying residents with safe drinking water, noting that they have had to share water sources with wild animals for years due to the scarcity. He also mentioned that a 20-litre jerrycan of water currently costs between 1,000 and 1,500 Shillings due to the shortage.

Pius Wakabi Rujumba, the Member of Parliament for Bugahya County, urged local residents and leaders to diligently monitor and supervise the construction to ensure the project delivers value for money.

Residents like Alias Ukongo and Harry Adegi expressed hope that the project will alleviate the severe water shortage they have been enduring, with some residents trekking 8 to 10 kilometers to find clean drinking water.
