IGAD Condemns Wad al Nourah Massacre: Urgent Calls for Peace in Sudan

IGAD has strongly denounced the recent massacre in Wad al Nourah, Gezira State, Sudan, where over 150 civilians, including 35 children, lost their lives in early June 2024.

Dr. Workneh, in his statement, emphasized the senseless brutality of the violence and its devastating impact on vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

“This barbaric act starkly illustrates the immense suffering endured by innocent civilians in this senseless conflict,” he remarked.

The incident in Wad al Nourah is part of a broader pattern of violence exacerbating Sudan’s already severe humanitarian crisis. IGAD has closely monitored the escalating hostilities with deep concern.

Despite international efforts to broker a ceasefire, the conflict persists, pushing regions towards famine and threatening millions of Sudanese civilians.

Dr. Workneh’s statement urges the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately halt hostilities and resume negotiations for a ceasefire.

He reiterated IGAD’s stance that the conflict in Sudan cannot be resolved militarily but requires dialogue and negotiation for sustainable peace and stability.
