Introduction: Jersey’s health service has taken proactive steps to address concerns regarding breast screening accuracy, initiating recalls and additional tests for some patients.

Review and Investigation The Royal College of Radiologists and the British Society of Breast Radiologists conducted a review prompted by internal concerns about the work of a specific radiologist.

Recall and Further Testing Health and Community Services (HCS) has identified 20 patients from a pool of 2,798 screenings who require further tests due to potential false negatives. An additional 14 individuals have been contacted regarding potential delayed diagnoses.

Apology and Patient Care Simon West, HCS deputy medical director, expressed regret for any anxiety caused and assured patients of prompt follow-up appointments within days.

Importance of Internal Reporting Mr. West emphasized the importance of staff reporting concerns internally to ensure patient safety and underscored the serious approach taken by HCS in investigating such matters.

Independent Review and Safety Measures HCS initiated an independent review spanning from the radiologist’s tenure since 2019. The radiologist’s practice has been restricted to safe diagnostic areas, excluding mammograms and ultrasound tests.

Precautionary Measures Patients are being recalled as a precautionary measure to verify diagnoses, not due to missed abnormalities. Those with potential delayed diagnoses have been informed accordingly.

Public Assurance and Support Services HCS reassured the public that the issue does not affect individuals who have not been contacted. The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is available for confidential advice and support.

Conclusion In response to concerns over breast screening accuracy, Jersey’s health service has prioritized patient safety through proactive measures, emphasizing transparency and support for affected individuals.
