According to a report, Manchester United would have to pay a higher compensation fee than initially planned if they decide to sack Erik ten Hag.

Throughout a largely disappointing 2023/24 season, in which the Red Devils finished eighth – their lowest-ever Premier League finish – Ten Hag’s future was repeatedly called into question.

However, after Ten Hag led United to a surprise FA Cup final victory against rivals Manchester City on Saturday, there is growing momentum for him to stay, despite reports before the match suggesting the club had already decided to sack him.

The Times now report that if United proceed with plans to fire Ten Hag, he would be owed a higher compensation fee due to his success in the FA Cup. United would have been able to sack him for less if they had lost to City, due to a clause in his contract related to European participation. However, winning the cup has secured their qualification to the Europa League.

Ten Hag, who has won two trophies in two seasons with Manchester United, wants a decision on his future sooner rather than later so he can explore other job opportunities if necessary. The Dutchman revealed last week that he has received offers to manage other clubs, but his focus remains on his duties at Old Trafford.

United will review Ten Hag’s position as part of their end-of-season evaluation, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram Glazer, Sir Dave Brailsford, and Jason Wilcox deciding his fate. Ten Hag still has a year left on his contract with the club.

Several managers have been linked with the United job in recent weeks, including Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi. However, former coach Kieran McKenna is expected to stay with Ipswich Town despite rumors of a return to Old Trafford.
