Kylian Mbappé’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain has turned contentious.
Mbappé, who officially transferred to Real Madrid on Monday, discussed his move in a news conference with the France national team on Tuesday.
He clarified that while he wasn’t “unhappy” at PSG, there were certain aspects that made him feel discontent.
“I wasn’t unhappy at PSG — that would be a slap in the face to those who supported me — I have always been happy,” Mbappé stated, via ESPN. “But certain things made me unhappy. However, as a leader, I couldn’t show that, so I tried to stay positive. The coach, the players, and the club’s staff supported me, and it would be bad form to complain and say I was unhappy. Yet, certain things and people made me unhappy.”
Mbappé had a well-known conflict with PSG’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, regarding his future at the club. Al-Khelaifi wanted Mbappé to extend his contract and reportedly threatened to bench him for the season if he didn’t sign a new deal.
“They made me understand that I wouldn’t play; they told me to my face, and they told me violently,” Mbappé revealed.
However, PSG manager Luis Enrique and football advisor Luis Campos intervened and “saved him,” according to Mbappé.
“Luis Enrique and Luis Campos saved me,” Mbappé said. “I wouldn’t have set foot on the pitch again without them. Just playing was a great source of pride, but next year I won’t be satisfied with a year like that.”
While this is Mbappé’s version of events, the French publication Agence France-Presse quoted a source close to PSG who claimed Mbappé “has absolutely no class.”
The source also said, “Nasser Al-Khelaifi has never dictated any decision regarding the team. Luis Enrique even said it himself, but despite everything, when Mbappé says something, everyone prints it as if it were true.”
Mbappe and PSG are currently in a financial dispute over his pay. Mbappe informed PSG in February that he planned to leave, leading the club to withhold his last two months’ salary. His wage for June is also expected to go unpaid as lawyers work to resolve the issue, according to L’Équipe.
