Mercy Eke’s Worry: Heritage Bank Closure

What you need to know:

  • Someone told her the Central Bank will give priority to people with less than ₦5 million in their accounts, but Mercy wasn’t happy about it.
  • They will first pay people with other bank accounts, and those without will need to go to a Heritage Bank branch with proof of their account and ID.

Mercy Eke, who won Big Brother Naija season 4, is upset because Heritage Bank, where she kept over ₦100 million, is shut down by the Central Bank of Nigeria. She shared her feelings on Instagram, saying she doesn’t know what to do since hearing the news on June 3, 2024.

People on Instagram tried to comfort Mercy and gave her updates on what’s happening. Someone told her the Central Bank will give priority to people with less than ₦5 million in their accounts, but Mercy wasn’t happy about it. She wondered how they could pay such a small amount from someone’s big savings.

Mercy explained why she chose Heritage Bank. She said they sponsored Big Brother Naija when she was a contestant, and everyone was told to open accounts there. Now, she regrets doing so and feels bad about it.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) said they would help customers get their money back. They will first pay people with other bank accounts, and those without will need to go to a Heritage Bank branch with proof of their account and ID.

Mercy Eke and others who had money in Heritage Bank are worried and frustrated. This situation shows how important it is to pick a stable bank and be careful with money.
