AI chatbots like ChatGPT will never be as intelligent as humans: Meta’s AI chief

What you need to know:

  • In an interview with the Financial Times, LeCun highlighted that current LLMs possess a “very limited understanding of logic” and lack essential features such as comprehension of the physical world, persistent memory, reasoning ability, and hierarchical planning.
  • When queried about achieving human-level intelligence in AI, LeCun shared that Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (Fair) lab, comprising approximately 500 individuals, is actively engaged in developing a new AI system capable of acquiring common sense and comprehending the workings of the world around us.

Meta’s Yann LeCun believes that developing Artificial General Intelligence is not a design or technology development problem but a scientific one.

Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun recently expressed skepticism regarding the capabilities of large language models (LLMs), such as those powering AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, stating that they will never be able to match human abilities in reasoning and planning.

In an interview with the Financial Times, LeCun highlighted that current LLMs possess a “very limited understanding of logic” and lack essential features such as comprehension of the physical world, persistent memory, reasoning ability, and hierarchical planning.

According to LeCun, large language models like ChatGPT are inherently unsafe because their accuracy in responding to prompts relies heavily on the accuracy of the data they are trained on. He emphasized that the evolution of these models is hindered by their dependence on human-provided data and that what may appear as reasoning is essentially “exploiting accumulated knowledge from lots of training data.”

Despite these limitations, LeCun acknowledged the significant utility of LLMs like ChatGPT and Gemini.

When queried about achieving human-level intelligence in AI, LeCun shared that Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (Fair) lab, comprising approximately 500 individuals, is actively engaged in developing a new AI system capable of acquiring common sense and comprehending the workings of the world around us. This endeavor, referred to as ‘world modeling,’ bears potential risks for Meta, as investors typically prioritize swift returns on their AI investments.

LeCun posits that the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) transcends mere design or technological challenges; it represents a scientific endeavor.

In a recent announcement, Mark Zuckerberg declared intentions to allocate more resources to AI, aiming to position Meta as “the leading AI company in the world.” However, following this declaration, the social media behemoth experienced a valuation decline of approximately $200 billion.
