Microsoft (MSFT.O) intends to invest 6.69 billion euros ($7.16 billion) in establishing new data centers in the northeastern Spanish region of Aragon, solidifying its position as a prominent hub for cloud computing across Europe.
The regional government of Aragon confirmed that the U.S. technology giant has submitted an application for a construction permit to build these data centers outside the city of Zaragoza, aligning with earlier reports from local newspaper El Heraldo.
According to the regional government, Microsoft’s investment will be allocated over a period of 10 years.
Microsoft, which recently disclosed a 2.1 billion euro investment in data centers in Madrid, chose not to provide comments regarding its plans in Aragon.
Following in the footsteps of its primary rival Amazon’s cloud computing unit AWS, Microsoft is focusing on Aragon. Amazon announced last month its intention to invest 15.7 billion euros over the next decade to construct data centers in Aragon.
Amazon has committed to powering its data centers entirely with renewable energy sources.

Zaragoza, Spain’s fifth-largest city, has evolved into a pivotal logistics and transportation center.
