Toronto police have reported that a security guard was shot overnight outside the residence of Canadian rapper Drake.
According to authorities, suspects in a vehicle shot the guard at the corner of the Park Lane Circle mansion around 02:00 EDT (06:00 GMT) on Tuesday before fleeing the scene.
It remains uncertain whether Drake was present at home during the incident or if he was a target of the shooting.
The rapper is currently involved in a verbal dispute with his U.S. rap rival Kendrick Lamar.
However, police stated it was premature in their investigation to discuss a motive.
“We are in contact with [Drake’s] team, and they are cooperating,” Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force informed reporters on Tuesday morning.
He mentioned that the police are currently reviewing footage capturing the shooting but refrained from disclosing details due to video quality concerns.
The victim is currently hospitalized and is in serious condition, he added. Witnesses informed Canadian media that he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the chest.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow addressed reporters, stating that she had been briefed by the police regarding the shooting but refrained from divulging specifics.
“Any shooting is not welcome in this city, and I hope the police will apprehend those who are breaking the law,” she expressed.
The ongoing feud between Drake and Lamar has escalated into a deeply personal confrontation, marked by a flurry of “diss tracks” exchanged between the two hip-hop giants over the weekend.
Drake’s residence, situated in Toronto’s upscale Bridle Path neighborhood, serves as the cover art for Lamar’s latest song “Not Like Us,” which currently dominates music charts both in the U.S. and globally.
In the song, Lamar accuses Drake of engaging in relationships with underage women and harboring a secret love child, with the imagery implying that Drake is sheltering multiple sex offenders under his roof.
Drake responded with “The Heart Part 6,” denying the allegations and expressing disgust towards them.
The rapper has previously discussed his residence, referred to as The Embassy, in his music and on social media. Due to security requirements, the property’s gates exceed the height limits set by city law.
Online images depict the property cordoned off with caution tape as police investigate the shooting.
The BBC has reached out to representatives of both artists for comment.
