Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited is enhancing its digital payment platform, FlexiPay, through a new collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Upesi Money Transfer. This partnership aims to facilitate convenient international money transfers for customers. However, amidst this initiative, the bank faces a legal challenge from a customer who alleges negligence resulting in the loss of Shs 68 million from her account.
Joweria Nakku, the plaintiff, remarked, “It’s ironic that Stanbic Bank is promoting its FlexiPay services as secure and convenient, yet I’ve suffered a substantial loss due to their negligence. I trust that the court will hold the bank accountable for failing to safeguard my account.”
Josephine Nakato Kasacca, Lead Customer Experience & Operations for FlexiPay, expressed, “Our collaboration with IFAD and Upesi Money Transfer underscores our commitment to delivering innovative and secure financial services. We believe our platform is ideal for seamless transactions, and we’re eager to extend these benefits to more customers.”
Nonetheless, Nakku’s lawsuit raises concerns about the bank’s capability to protect customer accounts. “The bank’s negligence has eroded trust among customers regarding the security of their funds,” stated her lawyer, Kimanje Nsibambi. “We expect the court to recognize the bank’s responsibility and hold them accountable for their failure to safeguard our client’s account.”
While the partnership announcement emphasizes FlexiPay’s robust features, including advanced encryption and security protocols, Nakku’s experience suggests these measures may not be foolproof against fraud.
As Stanbic Bank expands its services, it must prioritize enhancing account security and rebuilding customer confidence. The lawsuit underscores the importance of safeguarding customers’ financial interests and ensuring the adequacy of security measures. Nsibambi concluded, “We urge the bank to view our client’s case as a wake-up call and take immediate steps to bolster their security protocols.”
In summary, while celebrating new partnerships and technological advancements, Stanbic Bank must address vulnerabilities in its security framework to uphold customer trust and financial integrity.
