Shanghai allows Tesla to carry out Full Self-Driving pilot

According to The Shanghai Observer on Friday, Shanghai has authorized 10 Tesla vehicles to conduct tests of the company’s latest autonomous driving software. This move aims to facilitate its eventual deployment across China.

If Tesla successfully implements its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, it could enhance its competitiveness against local rivals in China. This development may transform the world’s largest automotive market into a battleground for more affordable driver assistance technologies, potentially escalating a price competition.

Tesla has been offering a subscription for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature in China for four years, albeit with limited functionalities.

In April, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk made an unexpected visit to Beijing, reportedly to discuss the impending launch of FSD. Reuters subsequently reported in May that Tesla is preparing to register FSD with Chinese authorities ahead of its scheduled rollout later this year.

During the same month, Chinese state media announced that Tesla had begun construction on a factory in Shanghai to produce its Megapack energy storage batteries. The media also praised Tesla for its continued investment in China.

According to The Shanghai Observer, Nanhui New City in Shanghai’s financial hub aims to bolster and expand the network surrounding Tesla’s energy storage facilities, thereby boosting the concentration of the energy storage sector.

Additionally, Tesla has finalized an agreement with Shanghai Lingang to facilitate local commercialization efforts, the report noted.
