Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to establish a battery manufacturing facility for electric vehicles in Fukuoka, located in the southwestern prefecture of Kyushu, according to a report by Nikkei business daily on Friday. The new plant is expected to supply batteries to a factory that produces luxury Lexus vehicles, enhancing Toyota’s supply chain for battery-powered cars and serving as an export hub for Asia.
While Toyota acknowledged the report, a spokesperson clarified that no official announcement has been made regarding this development. The company is actively working to expand its EV battery production capabilities, the spokesperson added.
The Lexus vehicles are produced at Toyota Motor Kyushu’s Miyata plant. Toyota has previously announced plans to introduce next-generation EVs globally starting in 2026, with these vehicles being produced by its EV-focused unit, BEV Factory. The company aims to sell 3.5 million EVs annually by 2030, with nearly half of these vehicles coming from BEV Factory. In 2023, Toyota sold 104,000 EVs.
Details about the investment required for the new battery plant and the timeline for its construction remain undisclosed. According to Nikkei, the plant will be managed by Primearth EV Energy, a Toyota subsidiary specializing in batteries for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles.
