Members of the Uganda Alcohol Industry Association (UAIA), led by Chairperson Jackie Tahakanizibwa, met with the Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, at Mengo to discuss potential collaborations and areas of mutual interest.

UAIA, which represents the formal alcoholic beverage manufacturers and other stakeholders in Uganda, includes over 40 manufacturers, importers, and distributors. Tahakanizibwa expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Buganda for its efforts in preserving cultural values and commended the Katikkiro for his leadership in guiding people to uphold cultural norms.

“Central Uganda and Buganda serve as business hubs with over 60% of business operations. We view the Kingdom as a strategic ally, and collaboration would enhance our institutions and communities while fostering business growth in the region,” Tahakanizibwa stated.

She also announced the organization of the first-ever Food and Beverages Exhibition, inviting the Kingdom to participate and highlighting how UAIA members positively impact their communities. Tahakanizibwa emphasized the potential for further collaboration in environmental conservation, sanitation, and youth skilling.

Addressing challenges, Tahakanizibwa highlighted issues with illicit alcohol trade and the proposed Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill, 2023. She urged the Katikkiro and the Kingdom to support UAIA in advocating for fair and workable regulations to sustain their businesses and contribute to national development.

“We support regulation but seek revisions to certain clauses in the bill to avoid stifling business,” Tahakanizibwa noted, citing potential significant revenue losses and job reductions if the bill passes as is. She recommended focusing legislation on combating illicit alcohol.

Katikkiro Mayiga welcomed the opportunity to work with UAIA on projects benefiting the community and pledged to advocate for fair legislation regarding the Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill. He acknowledged the alcohol sector’s role in Uganda’s socio-economic development and expressed support for UAIA’s responsible drinking initiatives.

“I am pleased with your efforts to drive positive change and pledge full support in combating alcoholism and illicit alcohol. Provide a detailed roadmap, and we will begin work,” Mayiga said. He also encouraged UAIA to promote export of heritage brands like Uganda Waragi to maintain Ugandan culture abroad.

UAIA members impact over 6 million livelihoods in Uganda through direct and indirect employment, including 53,750 grain farmers and 745,500 bar and retail workers. The sector contributes an estimated UGX1.1 trillion to the national tax base annually and invests UGX 20 billion annually in community initiatives across various sectors.
