Fred Nasasira, aged 27, has been apprehended in connection with the killing of 5-year-old Gift Amutuhaire in Rukungiri district. Gift’s body was discovered buried in a bush on June 19, 2024, three days after she was reported missing.
As per the authorities, Gift left her home on June 16, 2024, intending to visit her grandmother but never returned. Her mother, Ntegyerize Sarah, reported her disappearance as a kidnapping case at Kebisoni police station the following day.
Initial investigations indicate that Gift was last seen with Nasasira and another individual, Allan Akanyijuka, at a farm where they were watering cows. Akanyijuka stated he saw Nasasira carrying Gift on his back, but upon returning with water, they had vanished.
Nasasira has been detained by the police, who are currently probing the motive behind the alleged homicide. The postmortem report disclosed that the victim had been sexually assaulted prior to her murder.
Authorities in Rukungiri have urged anyone with pertinent information about the case to come forward as their investigation continues. Once inquiries are concluded, the suspect will face legal proceedings in court.
