Uganda Shines with Steeplechase Gold and 800m Bronze at 2024 CAA Africa Seniors

Strong Start for Uganda

On June 23rd, Uganda clinched two medals at the 2024 CAA Africa Seniors Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon.

Leonard Chemutai ran the 3000m steeplechase in 8:21:29, securing a gold medal. Meanwhile, Tom Dradiga earned bronze in the 800m final with a time of 1:46:69.

Steeplechase Victory

Chemutai’s victory highlighted Uganda’s prowess in long-distance events. Kenya’s Edmond Serem and Mathew Kosgei followed, taking silver and bronze with times of 8:21:94 and 8:21:98. Uganda’s Elphas Toroitich finished 8th, clocking 8:43:91.

800m Bronze Triumph

In the 800m final, Dradiga’s performance earned Uganda a spot on the podium. Kenyan Alex Kipngetich Ngeno won gold with 1:45:02, and Lesotho’s Hainguira Kethobogile took silver with 1:45:54.

Other Performances

In the men’s 400m final, Haron Adoli finished fifth, clocking 45:62. Senegal’s Diouf Tidiana Cheikh won gold with a time of 45:23, while Botswana’s Lee Eppie and Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi took silver and bronze.

For the women’s 400m final, Shida Leni placed seventh with a time of 53:50. South Africa’s Miranda Coetzee won gold, finishing in 51:16. Zambian Qincy Malekani took silver, and Nigeria’s Joseph Elo earned bronze.

In the women’s 800m final, Kenya’s Sarah Moraa Orobi won gold, clocking 2:00:27. Her teammate Lillian Odira took silver, and Mauritius’ Hajji Soukaina won bronze. Uganda’s Susan Aneno finished seventh with 2:02:54.
