A census enumerator in Namutumba District, Eastern Uganda, reportedly suffered a dog bite while conducting a household count during the ongoing population census. Seeking assistance, the enumerator, Patrick Isabirye, reached out to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) for support as he was injured while fulfilling his civic duty.
Isabirye, who encountered the dog bite while tallying household members at Ms. Madina Nabirye’s residence in Kangulumo ‘B’ village, Namutumba Town Council, expressed his predicament, stating that UBOS had not provided him with the necessary funds for medical treatment and rabies vaccination.
“I find myself stranded after being bitten by a dog suspected to have rabies, yet UBOS has not yet disbursed any funds that could have facilitated my treatment,” Isabirye informed journalists on Wednesday, May 15, appealing for assistance from concerned individuals.
In response, UBOS’s Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Godfrey Nabongho, mentioned that they had not received any official report regarding the incident. However, he assured that if the incident were confirmed, UBOS would offer the necessary assistance, considering that the affected individual was performing his duty.
“We are awaiting a formal report regarding the Namutumba incident, but UBOS is committed to supporting our staff in such situations,” Mr. Nabongho stated, emphasizing that the victim only needed to provide written documentation of the incurred expenses for UBOS to cover the medical bills.
