Uganda’s sole cyclist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Charles Kagimu, has pledged to deliver an impressive performance in his debut at the Games.

Paris 2024, featuring over 10,000 athletes, will take place from July 26 to August 11.

Kagimu, Uganda’s first cyclist to qualify for the Olympics, emphasized his readiness and determination to compete against the world’s top cyclists and proudly represent Uganda.

“When I competed in the African Games in Ghana earlier this year, no one believed I had a chance, yet I won a gold medal. Similarly, many may doubt my chances at the Olympics, but I am ready to prove them wrong,” Kagimu stated.

In an interview with Xinhua, Kagimu expressed confidence in his preparations over the past few months and his eagerness to compete at the Olympics.

“Competing at the Olympics is the dream of any athlete because it’s the pinnacle of sport,” Kagimu added.

He highlighted the importance of his training in the Netherlands and Mauritius, focusing on improving his speed and endurance ahead of the Games.

The President of the Uganda Cycling Association (UCA), Sam Muwonge, expressed strong confidence in Kagimu’s potential performance in Paris.

“This is significant for us as it marks the first time a Ugandan cyclist has qualified for the Olympic Games. We are not just aiming to compete; we want our cyclist to perform exceptionally and elevate Uganda’s profile,” Muwonge said.

In addition to Kagimu, Uganda will be represented in athletics, swimming, and rowing. Medal hopefuls include Joshua Cheptegei, three-time world champion and reigning Olympic champion in the men’s 5,000 meters, and Jacob Kiplimo, bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters at Tokyo 2020.
