Security authorities in Namayingo District are currently conducting inquiries into the perplexing disappearance of a UPDF soldier serving with the Fisheries Protection Unit at Lolwe Marine Detach.
Private Luke Kaponyang, whose military identity is R/A.248760, is purported to have vanished while carrying out his duties.
According to Trevor Solomon Baleke, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Namayingo, Kaponyang, aged 28, is believed to have met his demise while on duty.
Baleke stated that the soldier went missing on May 15th at 4:30 am allegedly after being abducted by Kenyan fishermen while on duty.
Initial investigations suggest that the deceased, accompanied by four others under the command of Lt Aggrey Acwamu, encountered four fishermen illegally operating within Ugandan waters near Hama and Wayasi islands in Namayingo.
During the encounter, the fishermen from Kenya reportedly seized Kaponyang aboard their vessel.
Security sources have revealed that a case involving suspected murder by drowning was lodged at Namayingo CPS under reference number GEF. 12/2024 for further investigation.
“The search for the missing soldier was launched, and on May 24th around 5 pm, his body was discovered by local fishermen in the waters of Lake Victoria near Singila island in Dolwe Subcounty,” Baleke disclosed.
“The fishermen then handed over the body to the Fisheries Protection Unit and promptly notified us.”
Baleke added that the body was subsequently transported to Bombo Military Barracks for postmortem examination and other necessary procedures.
It has been confirmed that Private Kaponyang hailed from Pallisa District.
