The 4th Infantry Division, stationed in Gulu, has voiced serious concerns regarding the increasing number of individuals in the region donning military attire resembling official UPDF uniforms.

Captain Ahmed Hassan Kato, spokesperson for the division, highlighted the alarming trend, noting the proliferation of civilians and private security firms wearing clothing adorned with UPDF markings, ranging from warm suits and jackets to ranger boots, berets, and even backpacks.

Citing the UPDF Act of 2005, Section 160 Part 2 CD, which explicitly prohibits individuals not affiliated with the security forces from wearing such attire, Kato emphasized the legal ramifications.

Moreover, a 2019 notice published in the Uganda Gazette reinforced this prohibition, expressly forbidding civilians from donning “military materials and decorations or anything that closely resembles them.”

The UPDF is urging those in possession of unauthorized military attire to promptly cease wearing them and surrender the items to either the Uganda Police Force or the UPDF.

Kato cautioned that failure to comply with these directives could lead to legal consequences, with charges potentially being filed against offenders.

Amidst these developments, the Ugandan military remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining law and order within the community. Kato reiterated the UPDF’s dedication to safeguarding peace and security for all citizens.

This crackdown on impersonation appears aimed at bolstering control and preventing the misuse of military insignia, underscoring the importance of upholding regulations to ensure public safety and preserve the integrity of the armed forces.
